In light of climate change and increased number of extreme weather events across the globe, there has been a growing demand for higher education institutions in Taiwan to train and develop a pool of highly-skilled professionals in urban planning and disaster management. Following this demand, in 2002 the MCU established the Department of Urban Planning and Disaster Management. Now, every year we admit a new cohort of students to our undergraduate, graduate, and professional graduate degree programs.

Our Department is unique not only in terms of its specialized focus on urban planning and disaster management, but also in terms of its approach to diversified professional training. We use an abundant number of digitized materials and innovative teaching techniques to cultivate students’ understanding and expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), regional disaster and rescue planning, disaster mitigation, disaster prevention and response system management, urban planning and design, community development, and environmental planning. As a result, our graduates are generally highly valued across various fields of employment in both public and private sectors. They are also eligible to take civil service exams for the Urban Planner, Land Policy Administrator, Fire Control Technician, Real Estate Appraiser, and Community Planner positions.

We recognize the need for highly qualified experts in these fields and encourage our students to critically assess and reflect on a number of issues surrounding the discourses of disaster management, urban planning, and urban design. Our ultimate goal is to bring a positive change to the environment and contribute to the local community and to the common well-being of the Taiwanese society. If your goals and aspirations match with ours, you are more than welcome to join us! Bear in mind though – our lectures are delivered predominantly in Chinese, therefore a high-proficiency in Chinese language is needed.

Best wishes,

Lin Wen-Yen,

Professor and Chair
